The Sophia Hawwa Foundation is a maternal support initiative serving pregnant and postpartum women in the DMV and beyond. Our focus is on being the village so many women lack during the most vulnerable and difficult time. We exist to reduce isolation, strengthen support networks, and help moms access what they need to thrive. You are not alone.
Provide a safe place for pregnant and new moms who are having a hard time. Show up for them when they have nobody else. We want to create a network for moms where those without a village can find one whether it be in their location or a digital one. Provide essentials before the baby is born, organize collective baby showers for moms due in the same month, create food trains for new moms, etc,,,
Fatima came to America when she was three years old. Her mother had her in a small rural village in Afghanistan where there were no hospitals or clinics. Fatima has three children of her own now and wishes to spread awareness about the plight of mothers worldwide. Motherhood is such a beautiful experience that should not be tainted by the absence of a village. She has worked with refugees, students, residents at the Arlington JDC and more. Community work is where she thrives and where her heart is at. Sophia Hawwa is her third baby and inspiration for this foundation.
Other services we will provide THROUGH partnerships and not with donations:

A Word from the Director
The truth is, I have never been more sad or lonely than I was during my pregnancy last year. And what hit me the hardest was realizing I was considered one of the “lucky” ones. I had some support. I had resources. I had a place to go. I felt guilty for even thinking I had it hard.
I couldn’t stop thinking, "what would I have done if things were even harder?"
If I’d had more medical complications, no family nearby, no friends, no safety net...what would that have looked like.
Being more active on social media during this pregnancy opposed to my other two pregnancies really opened my eyes to how many women were quietly suffering in so many different ways. There are pregnant women in shelters. Pregnant women trying to escape abusive partners. Pregnant women with no support at all. I felt something had to be done.
So I asked myself what I could realistically offer to help. I am a single mom myself. I don't have a ton of resources but I am driven and this issue is so close to my heart.
I thought to myself, "Okay...I’m a professional photographer, so I can provide maternity and newborn photos for moms who can’t afford that luxury. I’m also a social media marketing specialist. I’ve worked as a family liaison. I know how to find resources, build partnerships, and connect people to help."
I put all my skills together and started building a foundation designed to support pregnant and postpartum moms in the DMV with weekly check-ins, support circles, essential needs assistance, and community partnerships because no mother should feel alone during one of the most vulnerable seasons of her life. And then I did research about where in America these things were needed most. After I begin this program in my area, I can start working with new moms in other areas where they have the least amount of resources and across America.
I shared this vision with close friends who are ready to help me bring it to life. I decided it’s now or never! Especially as the weather gets colder and the need becomes even more urgent.
